About Somalisa Camp

Somalisa Tented Camp is set in the heart of Hwange National Park Zimbabwe, and is known as the land of the giants for its big elephant herds. Nestled in a stunning location tucked away on an acacia island along the edge of an ancient seasonal flood plain, Somalisa provides guests with breathtaking views of the savannah plains across the famous Kennedy Vlei line.

Consisting of seven elegantly furnished Sail Tents with gauze sliding doors, a glass wood-burner fireplace for the cold winter nights, and an overhead fan for the hot summer days, each tent has en suite bathroom facilities including flush toilets, an indoor and outdoor shower, as well as a copper slipper-style bathtub. The main decking area includes split level decking with a separate lounge and dining area, as well as a small splash pool for guests overlooking the "Elephant Pool" and a natural waterhole where herds of game congregate to drink and where guests can relax whilst soaking in the African bush.

Location

Somalisa camps is situated in the Hwange National Park, along the Kennedy vlei line within a private concession

Located between Victoria Falls and Bulawayo, bordering Botswana, Hwange National Park covers a 14,500 km2 plateau with an average altitude of 1,000m above sea level. The flora of the park is mostly Acacia woodland set in Kalahari sands, which have blown across from the Botswana desert over many decades. There are 63 man-made water holes in the park due to its arid climate, which pump calcium rich waters to the surface from 60 meters below ground level. With 480 km of game viewing roads network connecting waterholes and outstanding animal concentrations, the park is easily accessible and the most visited park in Zimbabwe - although not overcrowded.

How to get there

Fly into Victoria Falls airport, Kasane airport or Livingstone airport and drive to Somalisa Camps, Hwange.

Road: Self-drive with road transfer;
- road transfer from Hwange Main Camp (2 hours)
- road transfer from Victoria Falls (3 - 4 hours).

Charter: landing at Manga airstrip
Charter transfer from Victoria Falls: 30 - 40 minutes (with 30 minute game drive to camp).

When to go

Zimbabwe is a year-round destination, as it boasts a good climate throughout the year.

The dry season (from July/August, and driest in September and October) is the best safari time at Hwange National Park, as large concentrations of game, in particular elephant herds, must drink from the man made & pumped waterholes to survive in a very hot and dry environment. The rainy season (December to March) will see the wildlife dispersing across the park, and thus making it more difficult to spot them. The summer rains cause vegetation to burst into life, birdlife is spectacular at this time of the year due to the migrants coming down from the Northern hemisphere.

Important Information

As the country has adopted a multi-currency system for payments, hard currencies such as US Dollars, GBP Sterling, Euros and South African Rand are accepted widely and you are encouraged to carry small denominations for ease of trade.
