About Oliver's Camp
Established by pioneer Paul Oliver in 1992 this camp is for safari enthusiasts wanting more than the postcard-snaps of the Big Five. Set in the secluded Tarangire National Park, it is a camp that celebrates back-to-basics luxury in one of the most uncrowded corners of East Africa.
Oliver's Camp consists of 10 en-suite safari tents of Oliver's Camp. They are really well spaced, ensuring a feeling of exclusivity and intimacy. The camp design and atmosphere provide a classical bush experience: solid wooden furniture, comfortable chairs and a library with books on the surrounding nature and wildlife. The tents have excellent bathroom facilities, with running hot and cold water, flush loos and proper showers looking out over the Minyonyo floodplains. After activities, guests find a place to reflect and relax on their private verandas, in the lounge, library or dining tent or around the fireplace. Dinners are service in the dining tent or under the Tarangire sky. The camp crews have been a close team for many years and this clearly shows in their deep knowledge of the park and the quality of food and personal service.
Oliver's Camp is a camp where the blood-red leather armchairs match the ochre soils beyond the decking; where headboards are hand-carved from African mahogany and baobab trees puncture the horizon from your private veranda.
Come nightfall, little more than canvas separates your king-size bed from the restless wilderness beyond. Meals are taken communally at the main lodge, while around the campfire whiskies are poured and safari tales told late into the night.
Just 1km downstream from Oliver's Camp is Little Oliver's. Offering the same high level of service and authentic safari experience as Oliver's, Little Oliver's has 5 en-suite tents and works particularly well for a group or family travelling together, sleeping up to eleven.
Tarangire boasts large herds of elephant and buffalo, plus a large concentration of big cats and arguably the best bird diversity in East Africa with more than 500 species.
But there’s more to Tarangire than the game and birds. This rugged landscape offers a unique safari backdrop that transforms from rolling grasslands and vibrant swamps to forests of enigmatic baobab trees; according to legend, planted ‘upside down’ for growing too tall and proud.
Set in the remote wilderness zone in the south of the Park, away from the more crowded north, Oliver’s is also perfectly situated to ensure a year-round Tanzania safari experience as each passing season paints Tarangire in vibrant new colours.

Oliver's Camp is about 2 hours from the main Tarangire park gate, but the drive can easily take 3 hours when game viewing.

When to go
In April and May, when the annual rains come to an end, the lush grasslands and profusion of wildflowers provide the best opportunity for walking safaris, while the approaching dry season from August through to October brings vast herds of wildlife to the watery wetlands on the fringes of Oliver’s Camp. At this time, Tarangire boasts the highest concentration of mammals in any of Tanzania’s renowned national parks, yet as the November rains return the herds depart and the return of migratory birds provides ample entertainment for twitchers.
