About Lake Manze Tented Camp
Beneath a shaded canopy of tall doum palms in the Selous game reserve, you will find the Lake Manze Tented Camp. Situated on the shores of the incredible Lake Manze, the camp lies in an area of rich wildlife and is frequently visited by wildlife including elephants.
Staying true to its surroundings, the camp is simple and has a natural feel to it alongside a rustic charm.
There are twelve Meru style walk-in tents, each with twin or double beds, a flush toilet, outdoor shower and private veranda - perfectly situated to enjoy the morning ritual of elephants trampling across an old, well-worn elephant trail in front of the camp towards the river.
The communal area is simply a large thatched roof spreading above a sand floor, with armchairs and sofas for lounging with a drink to watch the animals come and go. What more could you want?
The Selous Game Reserve is the largest protected wet wilderness area in Africa, covering an area of 54,600 km2, almost 6% of Tanzania’s land surface. The Selous is four times the size of the Serengeti.
The Selous is a vast area for habitats to roam from riverine forest, sand river channels, miombo woodlands, wide-open savannas, and doum palm forests. The Rufiji River and its vast tributaries include the five big lakes that are Lake Manze, Lake Tagalala, Lake Nzelekela, Lake Siwandu and Lake Mzizimia. Because of this presence of vast amounts of water, there are over 2,000 species of plants, over 430 species of birds, and 60 species of animals that call the Selous home. It was because of this that in 1982 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the undisturbed nature and diversity of wildlife.
The reserve is home to all the larger mammal species: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and even the very illusive black rhino as well as wild dog and an array of river and bird life. It also contains about one third of all the wild dogs in the world. They need to roam vast areas and here in the Selous they have boundless woodlands and savannas in which to roam. The Selous has so many different habitats, therefore there is a wide choice of safari activities from boating, fishing (for predominantly tiger-fish and catfish) and walking to game drives. This is a wonderful place to immerse yourself in the African bush at an easy pace.
