About Karoo Lodge
The Samara game reserve is one of the largest game reserves in South Africa (70 000 acres) and it has a wonderful sense of space; a reminder of the insignificance of humans in comparison to the beauty of the Samara reserve.
Samara is situated 55km outside Graaff-Reinet, the fourth oldest town in South Africa it is full of charm and history, as well as shops, schools and friendly people. This ensures good network links and it can be accessed by air and road.
A colonial styled homestead of understated luxury, Karoo Lodge caters for individual travellers and families but can also be booked on an exclusive use basis for up to 18 guests. This is perfect for children over 8 years old when they can officially go on the game drives. They will also receive a goody bag full of exciting things to keep them entertained. Children get 50% off so this shouldn't be missed.
The lodge hosts a dining room, pool, great views and much more. The team provide activities including picnic opportunities on the mountains or by the river, with of course the daily game drives to see a variety of wild animals. Their blazing fires are sure to keep you warm and I ensure you that they always keep you entertained!
There are three Karoo style "cottages" with a fireplace and air conditioning, a luxury en-suite bathroom and an outdoor shower. These are situated in the garden.
There are four lodge suites in the main homestead. They are light, spacious and airy, all with a veranda, luxury en-suite bathroom and air conditioning.
There are two Sibella suites with an en-suite shower with a shared veranda overlooking the abundant wildlife at the waterhole. Both are with air conditioning. This is ideal for two couples or for a family of four.
One of the largest private reserves (27 000 hectares/70 000 acres) in South Africa, Samara has a wonderful sense of space, a reminder of the insignificance of humans in comparison to the vast beauty of the Karoo. The reserve encompasses the southern flank of the Sneeuberg mountain range (Snow Mountains) and Karoo Lodge is nestled below the escarpment.
Samara is situated 55km outside Graaff-Reinet, the fourth oldest town in South Africa, full of charm and history as well as shops, museums, restaurants and friendly people. Just 258km from Port Elizabeth, a city with good transportation links, Samara can be accessed by both air and road.
How to get there
By Road: The recommended route from Port Elizabeth is the R75 towards Graaff-Reinet for 258km. Turn right and take the R63 towards Pearston / Somerset East for 7km. Turn left onto the Petersburg gravel road and drive 23km to reach Karoo Lodge.
By Air: Daily flights from Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town to Port Elizabeth. Air charters from Port Elizabeth to Samara (gravel airstrip) can be arranged on request.
When to go
The Karoo experiences winter between May and September. During these months temperatures are between a minimum of 0 degrees celsius and a maximum of 20 degrees celsius around midday.
We provide you with fleeces and hot water bottles on all game drives. We do however advise you to bring a warm jacket and warm clothing suitable for the game drives which all take place on open safari vehicles. It is advisable to bring some light clothing as the temperature can rise considerably during the day.
The summer in the Karoo can be extremely hot with temperatures reaching over 35 degrees celsius. We recommend people bring light-weight clothing for day-wear as well as sun screen, but also include a few warmer items as the evenings can become quite chilly, dropping to lows of 10 degrees celsius.
