About Horizon Horseback Safari
Horizon Horseback was established in 1993 and is based in the malaria free Waterberg Biosphere Reserve in northern South Africa. This is an unspoilt part of the country with varied topography, from bushveld savannah to rocky outcrops and mountains. Over the years they have developed a collection of horse riding safaris which offer not only close encounters with game but also a diverse range of other rewarding riding experiences: polo-cross, western games, jumping, cattle mustering and swimming with your horse.
Safaris in Africa are an intimate experience: there is simply no better way of taking in the African bush, than by horseback. Becoming part of a herd of zebra or giraffe as they canter across the plains, or quietly approaching a grazing rhinoceros is a truly amazing feeling. Africa is a very special place, but Africa on horseback is truly magical.
The Signature Safari Lodge
If you participate in the Signature Riding Safari or the Family Safari then you will be staying at the lodge. The lodge is beautifully set alongside a large lake within the estate’s dedicated game reserve. All rooms are en-suite with either shower or bath or both facilities. Three double rooms are separate from the main lodge; two suites overlook the lake and have a small veranda area, the rondavel is a traditional African dwelling adjacent to the lodge with its own charm. There is a large living area, dining room and large stoep (or veranda) for guests to enjoy. Three sumptuous meals are served a day with afternoon tea before an afternoon ride. All drinks are complimentary.
If you prefer the look of the Classic Safari then you will be staying in Camp Davidson. It has recently been built high in the bushveld above the Matlapeng valley. It offers the opportunity to explore from a base camp nestled in the heart of the wooded mountains of the Waterberg. The camp commands a wonderful panoramic view of the central highlands of the Waterberg massif, while overlooking the picturesque Sunset Lake at the eastern boundary of Triple B Ranch.
In the late 19th century, Ted Davidson, one of the first members of the Baber family (owners of Triple B Ranch) to settle in the Waterberg, was a young man trading by ox wagon to remote cattle outposts of a young ranching area. A good days travelling may have been only five miles or so by rugged track, and so an itinerant life in the Waterberg meant a life by the camp fire. Horizon has captured that early camp atmosphere in Camp Davidson, with beautiful decked canvas tents nestled amongst the sandstone ridges overlooking grassy game filled valleys. Each tent is appointed as it would have been in Teds day with classic items that would have been essential to the traveller accustomed to regular nights in the bush.
Horizon Horseback is in Limpopo Province of northern South Africa. It is approximately 300km from Johannesburg, in the bushveld region of the Waterberg plateau.
