About Bisate Lodge
The magnificent Bisate Lodge opened in the Summer of 2017 and has been met with rave reviews. This luxury lodge is set on the edge of Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park in the north west of the country. Quite simply, Bisate has set new standards in terms of luxury, accommodation, style and service for this area.
The lodge is located in a natural amphitheatre of an eroded volcanic cone, and as such has breathtaking views of the volcano peaks of Bisoke, Karisimbi and Mikeno. The en-suite rooms have been built with these superb views in mind. Standards of luxury and design are high, everything has been thought of for the discerning traveller, but the lodge also retains comfort, warmth and much influence from local Rwandan culture.
A stay at Bisate isnât without a visit to see the unforgettable gorillas, with gorilla treks taking place on a daily basis. It is a truly enriching experience, learning about the iconic endangered species, the mountain gorilla, as well as participating in local biodiversity conservation efforts and engaging with the community. Bisate is set close to the park headquarters, meaning an easy transfer to the trek start point at the beginning of the day.
Other attractions include Ibyâwacu cultural village, the Twin Lakes of Ruhondo and Burera, the lava tunnels of the Musanze Caves, Dian Fosseyâs grave, and even seeing the golden monkeys, not to mention the colourful variety of bird life.
Bisate Lodge is set on the boundary of Parc National des Volcans (Volcanoes National Park) in Rwanda. The Virunga Mountain range spans Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Park is located in north-western Rwanda.
How to get there
International flights operate into Kigali direct from Brussels, Amsterdam or indirect from the UK via Europe or regional hubs. Bisate is reached by a scenic 3 hour drive from Kigali. An alternative option is a spectacular 20 minutes helicopter flight over dramatic scenery.
When to go
Rwanda can be visited at any time of the year. There are two rainy seasons:
The long rains last from mid-February to the beginning of June. The shorter rains are from mid-September to mid-December. From March to May the rains are heavy over the mountainous areas. The dry season is from June to September.
Permits for gorilla tracking in the relevant National Park can be purchased via True Luxury Travel but availability of permits can not be guaranteed until payment has been received. Permits are currently priced at $1,500 per person for the experience. This covers a one hour period spent with the gorillas as well as whatever length of trek you take to locate them. Different gorilla groups are allocated to different groups of guests based on physical fitness of the group. Visitor group sizes are limited to 8 people.
True Luxury Travel work with an experienced network of guides and drivers operating 4x4 vehicles to negotiate the sometimes less than smooth roads!
Travelling with children
Minimum age for gorilla viewing is 15 years. This age limit is non-negotiable and is for reasons of safety but also for possible disease transmission, with children under this age more prone to infection.
