About Nuarro Lodge
Nuarro is an unspoiled and breathtakingly beautiful place located in the blue waters of the Indian Ocean in Northern Mozambique.
Twelve luxury beach front chalets accommodate a maximum of 40 guests. The chalets were built on the dunes from local natural materials, by local people. All Nuarro's chalets have sea views. The bush gives them ample privacy and the large panoramic doors ensure fantastic ventilation.
Each chalet has a king size bed that can also be used as a twin room, while some have an optional twin bedroom upstairs for families. A generous mosquito net, a desk with chairs, a comfortable lounge and a large veranda with hammock provide essential personal comforts. They all have indoor and outdoor showers, a lounge area, a large wooden veranda, a sun deck with a view of the bay and a private path leading to your daybed and the beach.
The name of the local village is Nanatha. Everything at Nuarro was built by local people using local natural resources. The local people are co-owners of the land and by building Nuarro they are building their own future. Nuarro and Nanatha live in harmony together as neighbours. You can easily go for a walk through the village by yourself, but you can also be accompanied by a Nuarro team member or a volunteer who is active in the village.
Nuarro works closely with the local community. This ensures that local people benefit from the growth of responsible tourism at Nuarro. This is achieved directly through donations and indirectly through the creation of jobs for the local population. From each overnight stay, $5 is donated to the local community and $2 from each activity. Several projects were funded from these donations including the building of a community centre and medical post and various projects in the field of medical care, hygiene and agriculture are currently being developed. Apart from donations Nuarro has a significant impact on the development of the local economy. Nuarro employs a total of 80 local people and approximately 1000 family members depend on that income.
How to get there
When to go
Closed Season: Between 27th January and 25th March.
When travelling to Mozambique, passports must not expire before 6 months from the date of entry into the country and must have 2 blank pages left.
Tourist Visas are valid for 30 days when issued at the border points or airport immigration and can be renewed for an extra 30 days (to a maximum of 90 days) at an immigration office. The nearest immigration office from Nuarro is located in Nampula City, 4 hours drive from the lodge and extensions can be arranged if required.
Nuarro Dive Centre is kitted out with emergency Medic First Aid equipment (including 100% Oxygen delivery units) as well as diver trained MFA personnel. The Nuarro PADI Diving Centre is DAN (Divers Alert Network) insured.
All Dhows (traditional boats) carry life jackets, a mobile communication system, emergency kit (oxygen delivery units) and are conducted by experienced skippers. All boats and skippers are licenced as required by local laws.
The global location of Nuarro is privileged by its blue skies and hot sunny days during the majority of the year, thus it is recommended that all guests bring sunscreen ointments, protective clothing for prolonged swims and hats for bush and beach trekking (all of the above will be available for sale at the lodge).
Travel insurance is required in order to travel to Nuarro lodge.
Malaria prophylactics are recommended for short stay guests (2 to 3 weeks) as well as vaccination for main tropical diseases. Prior to embarking a medical consultation is recommended to ensure all preventative medicines have been correctly prescribed by a doctor. Malaria treatments and physicians are available in Nampula City (4 hours drive from Nuarro) for the guest who does not wish to take preventative treatment. Nuarro (and Mozambique) is not malaria free, however great efforts are taken to control the incidents of Malaria within the local population. The propagation of the mosquito is controlled by regular health and sanitation checks throughout the lodge. All rooms are equipped with netted windows and doors, as well as with a large mosquito net cover for the king-size beds. Natural essential oils such as citronella are sprayed daily to discourage mosquito occurrence within the lodge area.
Baggage restriction of 15kgs per person for the air charters.
