About Muzimu Tented Camp
The Gorongosa Collection has proudly announced the construction of the first luxury tented camp within Gorongosa National Park. Construction began March 2017 and after unsurprising delays associated with operating in a location like this, the camp is now expected to fully open for paying guests in 2019. 2018 will be a period of soft opening with all services, facilities and activities being tried and tested in full.
The latest news is that the highly regarded luxury hotel brand The Royal Portfolio have taken over the Mizumu project and will be launching the camp as Royal Malewane for 2019. South African based, The Royal Portfolio currently owns properties that include: Royal Malewane in the Timbavati Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger ecosystem; Birkenhead House, a beautiful beach house in Hermanus; the opulent La Residence in Franschhoek and the award-winning The Silo in the heart of Cape Town. The group has plans to open both Royal Gorongosa and a possibly a second property further to the east in the coming years.
The plan is for an opening date in 2019, but with any project in such a challenging area and with a complex past as this area of Mozambique does, we will monitor the progress and keep updating the site with further information.
It's worth having a read of the opening brief of Muzimu, the original property intended for this site:
Muzimu Tented Camp has the meaning ''The Spirit of Gorongosa'' and has promised to provide an incredibly intimate setting due to having only 6 tents, each overlooking the beautiful Mussicadzi riverbed.
Muzimu Tented Camp is the first exciting development of the Gorongosa Collection and marks the investment in tourism within The Gorongosa National Park, formerly known as ''The Place that Noah Left His Ark''. The national park was almost completely destroyed due to years of civil war, but after years of hard work, the wildlife within the park has rebounded to numbers greater than 70,000. Therefore, the Gorongosa National Park now offers visitors a thriving and new safari experience. At Muzimu, a skilled and experienced team will guide guests on safaris by car, boat and on foot. Guests also have the unique opportunity to visit the Gorongosa Restoration Project and actually be part of one of the greatest and most important wildlife restoration stories. Guests will get to see first-hand the contributions made to this incredible wilderness through the use of cutting-edge science and research.
Guests can stay here with the knowledge that the tourism contributes towards conservation through ensuring the sustainable use of the breathtaking and extraordinary ecosystems within this momentous park. Visitors leave Gorongosa changed, enlightened by knowledge and aware that they are part of the incredible journey of the National Park.
Muzmi Tented Camp development is situated within the beautiful Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique, which has been rated as one of the most ecologically diverse parks in the world. Mozambique is incredibly long and thin in shape, this is what makes the wildlife diversity here so special and the country possesses some of the most uncontrived bush experiences in the whole of Africa. The landscapes within Gorongosa comprises of Mount Gorongosa, Lake Urema, and its rivers, grasslands, and forests, not to mention the incredible Great Rift. The diverse nature of Gorongosa provides guests with an unrivalled wildlife experience as well as a deep immersion into the troubled past and rich culture of Mozambique.
How to get there
The closest international airport is Beira International, which is approximately a 4-hour drive from the reserve. The reserve can also be accessed by small aircraft from Beira International, approximately a 25 minute flight.
Instead of Beira International, there is also a small domestic airport closer to Gorongosa called Chimoio. You can connect from Maputo. Road transfers can be arranged from Chimoio and takes approximately 3 hours each way.
When to go
Once complete and operational, the camp will be available from April to the end of December each year, of course, weather permitting. Gorongosa National Park is closed from mid-December until April 13th every year.
May to November is the best time to visit Mozambique as this is the winter season. This time of year provides cooler temperatures with the least chance of rain.
Initial full opening date was for 2018, this has now been delayed with a soft-opening to trade partners in 2018 and full operation due to commence in 2019.
