About Topi House
Topi House borders both the 23,000 acre Olare Orok Conservancy and the Maasai Mara National Game Reserve. The site has been carefully selected to maximise the views through the small thorn tree forest, in which the house sits, over the national park boundary and into the reserve beyond. The house lies just 40 minutes, as part of a game drive, from Ol Kiombo airstrip. From this coveted spot you get unrivalled access to the eastern side of the Maasai Mara.
This is designed to be your very own private bush home in the middle of Africa's greatest ecosystem. It comes with a full complement of well-trained and experienced staff at guests' disposal including a chef, wildlife guide and house manager to ensure a seamlessly-run and personal safari experience. The area, with its rolling hills, is ideal for bush picnics and sundowners with a view. The property is positioned directly on the wildebeest migration route and has been known to experience huge volumes of game right up to the front door.
The house consists of three well sized en-suite bedrooms which are linked by a large veranda running along the front. At the far end lies the living area, which is made up of an open plan sitting/dining room complete with an open log fire. Guests can also sit around the camp fire near the house, under the stars. Your team will prepare all meals to the usual high standard and will cater for bush picnics or lunches out on the lawn under the shade of the acacia trees.
A fully qualified guide and vehicle will be on hand to assist with a wide range of safari activities which can include game drives and visits to local villages, schools and trading centres. Game viewing is done primarily in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve and can be arranged in the conservancy, so offering a wide range of experiences.
Topi House is located in the Ol Chorro Losoit valley within the beautiful Lemek hills, far from the tourist trail. It sits within the 70,000 acre Mara North Conservancy area from where the Mara Bush Houses team have operated their wilderness expeditions for more than twenty years.
The Maasai Mara is cooler than Nairobi and the Kenyan coast. It sits at an altitude of 5,000 to 7,000 feet above sea level, so it is greener and more moderate in temperature than other regions of Kenya. Temperatures range from 30°C maximum during the day to a cooler 15°C at night. During the long rains season of March to May the conservancy and the surrounding areas are green and burgeoning. Seasonal rivers fill with water and the plains become marshlands in some areas. Cooler months of June and July follow when the rains end. The Great Migration happens sometime after the rains, it’s a spontaneous event governed by the ancient pulse of survival in the herds which is in tune with the rains. The herds usually begin arriving in the Mara in July (sometimes as early as June) and stay to graze the plains until November. When the grasses have diminished and the riverbeds are dry, they head back to the pastures of the Serengeti. The short rainy season follows in late November to December and the temperature climbs through January making this the hottest month.
