About Sosian Lodge
Sosian lies in Laikipia, in the highlands of Kenya and is a private ranch of 24,000 acres with access to a total of 75,000 acres of game-viewing. The area is completely unfenced and wildlife roams freely across open plains and forested riverines. Sosian is both homely and welcoming, and also offers a huge variety of different activities and wildlife.
Guests are accommodated in an elegant 1940's farmhouse that has been beautifully renovated. The lodge sleeps 14 with more space in the family cottage for children if needed. The family cottages has an interconnecting room to sleep another three children with their own bathroom. All the rooms are en-suite with their own private verandas. There is also a larger and more private honeymoon cottage, known as the Italian Cottage, built by Italian artisans post war.
There is also a swimming pool, tennis court, and organic vegetable garden, Sosian is well known for its delicious home cooking using fresh ingredients from the garden. Seven cottages lie in the tropical garden overlooking Mount Kenya and miles of unspoiled Africa.
Sosian is one of a unique group of ranches varying from 5,000 to 100,000 acres on the Laikipia plateau and covers 24,000 acres of very diverse ecosystems. Open grassy plains are home to plains game such as oryx, Grant's gazelle, ostrich and cheetah. Laikipia boosts a population of 80% of the rare Grevy's zebra and Jackson's hartebeest in its region. To the south of the ranch, the bush is thicker and full of acacia woodland which is home to several elephant herds (Laikipia ranking second in the highest elephant populations in Kenya), buffalo, reticulated giraffe, wild dog, lion and leopard.
Sosian strives to be as eco-friendly as possible, and to promote eco-friendly practices in its day to day development. Sosian try and support the local community wherever possible and employ many of them on the ranch and in the lodge. In total Sosian employ 80 staff meaning that 80 families benefiting from your stay at Sosian. They have been awarded 3 stars by Eco-hotels of the world for their contribution towards promoting eco-tourism wherever possible.
Sosian is situated at a junction of many different tribal areas in Northern Kenya, a very diverse area rich in traditions and untouched by western development. Samburus, Pokots, Turkanas and many smaller tribes live in the area and by special arrangement guests at Sosian may pay a visit to a local village.
Sosian has started a programme supporting the local school just 3kms from the ranch where 330 children attend daily. Primary school education is now free under the government in Kenya but this is not the whole picture. While school fees and teacher salaries are paid, the numerous extras such as books, stationary, desks, sports equipment and even basic sanitation are not covered.
