About Saruni Mara

Saruni Mara is the only small, boutique lodge in the Mara, with five elegant cottages, one family villa and one private villa. The lodge is nestled in a secluded valley in the heart of the most exciting wilderness in Africa: Mara North Conservancy an exclusive, private wildlife concession bordering the world-renowned Masai Mara National Reserve. Maasai warriors guide you throughout, sharing their ancient wisdom of the area and animals and their fascinating way of life.

For families, the impressive family villa has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a lounge and dining room and a large terrace. Nyati House, the private house, has a further two bedrooms and two bathrooms with a huge main lounge area and dining table, all overlooking the rolling plains of the Mara. Both options are perfect for families who want space, privacy and flexibility.

A unique feature of Saruni Mara is its collection of books and its library, the most beautiful in the African bush. With thousands of rare books and its very private location, Saruni's library is a perfect place to relax.

Saruni runs the Maasai Wellbeing Space. It is a unique feature in the Maasai Mara: in the most serene and relaxing environment, guests enjoy massage and wellness treatments under the supervision of highly trained staff.

Location

Mara North Conservancy is a beautiful private wilderness area of more than 30,000 hectares. It is a vital part of the Masai Mara ecosystem as it forms the north-western zone, bordering the Masai Mara National Reserve in the south of Kenya. Professional wildlife and tourism management ensures guests of a truly exclusive and private safari experience with a very low vehicle density. The Masai Mara is famous for its unique concentration of wildlife, birds, rich vegetation and open savannah. It has been classified among the "Seven Wonders of the World" due to the extraordinary annual migration (July - November) when over 1.3 million wildebeest and zebras cross from the Serengeti in search of greener pasturesLess famous, yet very impressive, is the Loita Hills migration, where thousands of local wildebeest come to the Mara North Conservancy (December to May). The conservancy is a partnership between conservationists, investors and over 800 Masai landowners. The aim is to create a best practice, world-class conservancy with long-term commitments to the environment, wildlife, and local communities. To form the conservancy Mara North leased land from individual Masai landowners. This marks the first time that these Masai landowners have received substantial and direct income from wildlife.

Together, MNC and the Masai community are implementing sound land management policies including, controlled grazing, holistic management practices, low volume and low impact tourism, and community land-use plans. We strongly believe that tourism has the capacity to protect a natural wildlife habitat, alleviate poverty and contribute positively to the local community. Mara North Conservancy is showing how wildlife, communities and tourism all stand to benefit from a new brand of conservation.Mara North Conservancy is leasing land from Masai landowners in the Masai Mara region for the purpose of establishing Kenya's premier low-density wildlife conservation area. We have created a best practice conservancy with long term commitments to the environment, wildlife and local communities.
Saruni is in the Masai Mara ecosystem, Kenya.

How to get there

We will help assist with all necessary internal transfers after booking.

BY AIR
It is an 8-hour 30-minute international flight to Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta Airport, then it is a 30-minute trip by road to Wilson Domestic Airport. Scheduled flights from Nairobi Wilson airport to the Mara North airstrip takes just under an hour. Once at the airstrip you will be met by your Maasai guide from Saruni Mara and taken on a game drive slowly back to the lodge.

When to go

The only time to avoid Kenya is during the long rainy season in April and May. November is considered the short rainy season, however, these are less predictable and are much lighter. The best time of year to visit the Maasai Mara is during the Great Wildebeest Migration which tends to pass through the Mara between mid July to late October but the wildlife is present year-round, and there is always plenty to see here. All year round game is world class, if you go out of season there are less cars and cheaper rates to benefit from!
