About

About Lewa Wilderness

Situated near the equator, Lewa Wilderness is one of Kenya's oldest private safari experiences. For forty years guests have been coming to this remarkable region to be part of an adventure like no other.

The lodge comprises nine unique and comfortable, tastefully decorated thatched cottages with spacious en-suite bathrooms, fireplaces in the sitting areas and verandas with spectacular views.

Five of the rooms are Hill Rooms that look down Lewa's Western Marania Valley. The other four are Garden Rooms on the lush lawn adjacent to the main living area. All rooms have a sitting room area with a well stocked bar and an open log fireplace for the frequent cool nights, as well as spacious en-suite facilities.

The Garden Rooms at Lewa Wilderness are nearest the main areas and are built in pairs with private en-suite facilities and a shared veranda and sitting room. The rooms are flanked and fronted by well kept lawns which give families that extra outdoor space to use. There is a view down to the bush pool and onto the Lewa Wilderness valley beyond. These Garden Rooms were built to cater for families and remain very close to the heart of everything that happens here.

The Hill Rooms have been added most recently to take advantage of the stunning northerly views from Lewa. On a clear day the view stretches away, giving a true perspective of just how remote this setting is. Each room is quite different in its layout and sleeping configuration, and takes advantage of the uneven hillside to form unusual shapes which load them with character.

Guests can relax by the fire in the cosy sitting room and share meals around a long banquet table in the open-air dining room. Natural springs, home-raised livestock, and a 5-acre organic garden are transformed by skilled chefs into healthy and delicious food.

Location

Lewa Wilderness is situated within one of Kenya’s major private conservation successes, the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, at the foot of Mt. Kenya. Lewa Downs has been the Craig family home since 1924 when they came from England and began raising cattle here. Lewa Wilderness is the original family home of the Craig's and is still home to Will and Emma, who host together with their team of exceptional guides.

The 62,000-acre conservancy is home to a huge variety of wildlife and also protects some of Kenya’s most endangered animals, including the black rhino and Grevy’s zebra. The trust is also dedicated to helping local communities develop eco-tourism enterprises, the proceeds of which can help fund further education, conservation and social welfare.

How to get there

The lodge is accessed via 30 minutes’ road transfer from Lewa Downs Airstrip. It’s situated on the steep slopes of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy's Western Marania Valley, and it boasts spectacular views all the way down to the valley floor!

When to go

Lewa Wilderness is closed in November.
