About Jahazi House
This stunning authentically Swahili house is named after the historical sailing dhows that brought Lamu its trading wealth. As you lounge on the private beach and look out into sea, you can spot the traditional dhows coming and going as they drop off fresh fish to the local market. Designed in the quintessential Swahili architecture, this house is built around a central courtyard which holds the very private swimming pool, which acts as a natural coolant to the bedrooms which open out onto it.
It is hard to feel anything other than completely relaxed at Jahazi house, as a cook, a room/table steward, and a laundress eliminate your stresses and take over responsibility during your stay. There are no cars and no roads on Lamu island, only donkey trails, boat rides and leisurely beach strolls. Take out the houses private 38-foot dhow for daytrips, lunch, or some particularly picturesque sundowners.
Lamu is a UNESCO world heritage site and a sense of living history pervades the islands. Well off the beaten tourist track, the archipelago offers many opportunities for adventure and fun.
How to get there
Take a 1 hour 40 minute flight from Nairobi to Lamu. You will be collected from Manda Airport and taken by private speedboat to Kizingoni Beach. It is about a 20 minute journey passing by Shela village.
When to go
May to June is the rainy season on the Lamu coast, with the weather improving from July onwards. March and April are the hottest months of the year with temperatures reaching above 40 degrees Celsius. Gentle offshore breezes and constant sunshine makes December to February the best time to visit.
You need a visa to enter Kenya. You can either get a visa on arrival at the airport, or before you travel. Visit the evisas website (http://evisa.go.ke/evisa.html) to apply for single entry and transit visas.
Visit your health professional at least 4 to 6 weeks before your trip to check whether you need any vaccinations or other preventive measures.
Travelling with children
Children of all ages are welcome, babysitters can be easily arranged. The four bedrooms on the ground floor open out onto the swimming pool, gates can be put on to doorways. It is possible to add an extra bed to any of the rooms.
