About Ekorian's Mugie Camp
Ekorian’s Mugie Camp is a private camp with an exclusive location on the Mugie Sanctuary in North Laikipia, where game and birdlife viewing is prolific. The camp is simply designed with a central mess area and six spacious but cosy tents, each en-suite with hot and cold running water and flush toilets under thatched roofs.
Ekorian’s Mugie Camp is a semi permanent camp. The owners, Josh and Donna, designed the camp with a small team of carpenters and tailors; with the notion to make as little impact on the environment as possible. The camp is solar powered, and has specially designed water heating boilers. Josh was able to put his carpentry skills into good use and much of the furniture was made in camp with the local dead olive wood - which the Turkana name “Ekorian” derives.
Being in the heart of the Mugie Sanctuary brings days full off activities and excitement. From the comfort and safety of camp, one can enjoy frequent sightings of animals including elephant, giraffe, buffalo and more. The evenings also bring excitement in the form of four different owls in camp, as well as bush babies, lions roaring and hyenas laughing.
It's fun to take on an early game drive before coming back to camp for a hearty breakfast and to see what the rest of the day has in store.
Ekorian’s Mugie Camp (named after the olive tree in the Turkana language) is located on the Mugie Sanctuary near Mugie Dam at the northern end of the Laikipia Plateau near Mount Kenya, where opportunities for wildlife viewing and bird watching are abundant.
Mugie Ranch is 46,000 acres but 22,000 acres has been set aside to create Mugie Sanctuary. The Sanctuary is home to around seventy species of mammal including lion, cheetah, leopard, buffalo, elephant, eland and hyena. There are many endangered species residing on Mugie including the Grevy’s Zebra and Jacksons Hartebeest.
Mugie is one of the core study areas of the “Laikipia Predator Project”, a research study aimed at improving the conservation of large carnivores throughout Africa. Across most of Africa, people have eradicated predators such as lion, wild dog and hyena, largely because these animals are a threat to livestock. With human densities rising, even predators living inside national parks are threatened as reserve border areas are developed and settled in. Laikipia District is one of the few areas where people, livestock and predators co-exist. The Laikipia Predator Project is aimed at understanding how such co-existence is possible.

All visitors to Kenya require an entry visa. This can be obtained prior to travel by applying to the Kenyan Consulate in your country. Alternatively visit visas can be obtained upon arrival.
Ekorian's Mugie camp is run entirely on solar power and it is important that you turn off all lights and power sockets that are not being used. The use of hairdryers and other appliances that use a lot of power are prohibited. The voltage is 240 volts and plugs with three square pins (UK standard). Visitors are advised to bring adaptors with them that are usually readily available at your airport of departure.
A jersey or jacket is needed for evenings and early mornings, as it can be very cold due to the high altitude. For open-air vehicle game drives, a warm sweater or fleece are highly recommended.
