Jack’s Camp

Makgadikgadi Pans

A relic of one of the world’s largest super-lakes, the Makgadikgadi dried up thousands of years ago as a result of the continued shifting of the earth’s crust and is now one of the largest salt pans in Africa. Jack’s Camp is situated in this prehistoric setting offering just ten bedouin-style canvas tents with en-suite bathrooms and spacious bedrooms with persian rugs and cool cotton sheets. It’s not uncommon for guides to team up with local bushmen to escort you on morning walks or game drives. Four wheel drive quad bikes will allow you to venture far into the centre of the Makgadikgadi, explore remote archaeological sites and periodically discover never before documented fossil beds of extinct giant zebra and hippo. Jack’s Camp is the only place where you are virtually guaranteed to see the rare and elusive brown hyena. At the camp there is a beautiful swimming pool where you can escape the heat and relax in the cool waters. Afternoon tea at Jacks camp is a sumptuous affair and the chef goes to great trouble to create mouth-watering sweet and savoury delicacies. The inviting beds are warmed by hot water bottles and you can turn in watching the billions of stars on your ceiling.During the months of April and November, experience the Makgadikgadi in the dry season. Take a quad bike across to salt-crusted pans or spend a night sleeping under the stars, witnessing the pans in their most iconic state. Alternatively, experience the pans in the green season from November to April and see the desert transform. Salt flats are turned into watery grasslands, flamingos and flocks of migratory birds arrive to nest, and the zebra migration is in full swing.

Reasons we love Jack's Camp

  • This camp is incredibly eclectic, the tented bedouin camp provides a striking contrast between the vibrant colours of the tents and the desert surrounds
  • Best meerkat spot in Botswana, view these little desert creatures from the comfort of your private deck
  • The camp is situated on a relic of one of the world’s largest salt pans
