About Simien Lodge

This hotel is famous for being the highest hotel in Africa and sits at 3260 metres. For the adventurous traveller who craves that 'Everest base camp' experience - this hotel is for you. A place to start some of the most exclusive trekking in the world.

A tukel is a high quality room with 2 large single beds (2m x 1m). There is a bathroom with shower. All rooms have under-floor heating by solar (which of course works when there is sun). The beds have duvet bedding with pure white cotton sheets. Each room has a sheltered balcony. All rooms have fibreglass insulation to the ceiling, walls and floor.

There are family rooms available: these are rooms with bedroom and lounge. The master bedroom had a queen sized bed (2 x 2 m) with duvet bedding. The lounge has two single beds or settees. The master bedroom has en-suite bathroom and shower. Solar under-floor heating and solar hot water backed up by electric immersion heaters. The VIP rooms can therefore accommodate 4 people. All rooms have fibreglass insulation to the ceiling, walls and floor.

The restaurant is a spacious area with a log fire centre piece. The kitchen is essentially swiss made, hygienic and ergonomic. In the evening we generally serve a set meal which is prepared by the master chef . Meals are normally international fare but we accommodate for vegetarian and other religious foods. All day long we serve an "A la carte" menu of Ethiopian and European food.

The bar has recently been updates with warm comfortable furnishings. It is the highest place to get a drink in Africa.

Important Information

There is a strict rota for guides and scouts to the Simien Mountains at the park entrance. Simien Lodge does not get involved with any hiring of staff and this must be organised at the park office in Debarak. But it is very easy and does not need to be organised from abroad. Once you arrive at the park office then everything falls into place. You will be assigned a scout and then if you need other staff such as cooks then they are immediately on hand. It is not advised to book in Gonder or elsewhere. Beware of touts and only reserve at the park entrance where you will receive a genuine ticket to enter the park.

Note that the park is open from 6am to 6pm - so it is important to arrive before nightfall.
