Kalahari Desert, Namibia

Namibia

The vast Kalahari Desert covers huge swathes of South Africa and Botswana, as well as seeing its western fringe creep in to Namibia. The landscapes are ones of low rolling red sand dunes and they are especially striking at sunrise and sunset when the light adds a magical hue to proceedings. The Kalahari acts as a convenient stop on the long drive between Windhoek and the Fish River Canyon, with visitors choosing to spend a night or even two in this charming area. The deserts can be explored on foot, by e-bike and in 4×4 vehicles, with guides on hand to point out the unique desert flora and fauna of the area. There will also be the chance to see meerkats – an iconic experience and one not to be missed.Lodges here are all comfortable and well-run, there certainly isn’t anything flashy in this part of Namibia but it is still a very rewarding area and well worth a visit when exploring the south of the country.
